Mike Jones is an educator, school leader, and speaker with nearly three decades of experience serving students, families, and educators in Fayette County Public Schools. His journey has taken him from the special education classroom to high school administration, through 14 years as a middle school principal, and into his current work as an administrator, technology coordinator, and athletic director at Mary E. Britton Middle School. Through every role, one thing has remained constant: his belief in people.
Mike believes that one of the greatest things a leader can give another person is the knowledge that someone genuinely believes in them. Throughout his career, he has seen students who were struggling, discouraged, or defined by their mistakes begin to change when an adult chose to see their potential instead of their past. That same philosophy guides the way he leads adults. He believes leadership is not about a title, an office, or having authority over others—it is about relationships, trust, consistency, and being willing to do the work alongside the people you lead.
At the heart of Mike’s leadership philosophy is a simple principle: lead through commitment and example, not authority. Leaders earn influence by showing up, keeping their word, doing what they ask others to do, and demonstrating through their actions that people matter. Mike believes high expectations and genuine care belong together—and that sometimes the most important thing a leader can say to another person is, “I believe in you, and I’m not giving up on you.”
Drawing from nearly 30 years of real experiences in schools, Mike shares the successes, failures, difficult conversations, second chances, and unforgettable students that have shaped the leader he is today. His message to students and educators is simple but powerful: Never underestimate what can happen when someone believes in you—and never underestimate the difference you can make by being that person for someone else.
